Step 2: Define the Purpose (Bias)

When evaluating the information on the Internet, it is also necessary to identify the purpose for which the author is publishing it. Every author has a “point of view” or bias that is in turn communicated through their reporting. Asking some of the following questions will help you determine if the author’s intent and method of presenting the data proves credible.

  • Who is publishing or sponsoring the information?
    • Is the information being presented by the corporate entity that creates the product?
    • Is the information presented by an educational, governmental or non-governmental organization?
  • Does the author present the information in first person or third person?
